Men Alive performs and walks at AIDS Walk 2011
|
Very early Sunday morning May 1, 2011, approximately 45 Men Alive members arrived at Disney Resort in Anaheim to join thousands of volunteers who walked to raise funds for a worthy cause. After reaching the end, they joined more members to sing three sets of ABBA songs just before the rest of the walkers hit Downtown Disney for closing ceremonies.
Pearl Jemison-Smith was honorary chair this year as she was one of the handful that originated Orange County Aids Walk in 1986. The day before this year’s walk marked the 3 year anniversary (to the day) of the loss of her son Jamie to complications from HIV/AIDS. There were people there from every walk of life. The disease affects without discrimination and for those few hours, everyone was walking for the same goal and cause without looking at who they were walking with.
The Men Alive team of 61 was the second-highest money-raising team with over $21,000 in donations. Men Alive is grateful to everyone who contributed so generously to this important cause.
One member re-connected with an old friend he hadn’t seen for 14 years.

Men Alive Takes Outreach Concert to Ventura
 |
On March 14, 2009 Men Alive traveled to Ventura, California for an Outreach Concert benefitting the Ventura County Rainbow Alliance (VCRA), Ventura County’s only GLBT & HIV resource organization.
In February 2009, 15 year-old Venura middle-school student Larry King was murdered by a classmate because Larry was gay. Following this tragic event, the Chorus wanted to visit Ventura to encourage and uplift the deeply saddened community.
The concert, performed at the Ventura Center for Spiritual Living in downtown, was a nearly sold-out affair, drawing the community together for great entertainment and a great cause.
This outreach concert, drawing on songs from our Motown show in Spring 2009, was one of the first of Men Alive’s “Men On a Mission” (“MOM”) events. The purpose of MOM Outreach is to take Men Alive beyond the borders of Orange County and to demonstrate our Mission in supporting other groups, charities and audiences that might not otherwise get a chance to experience the Chorus. It is primarily a chorus member driven program. Look for more MOM outreach activities in the future.
